How to download and Install CentOS Stream on VirtualBox

In this article, we will see how to download and Install CentOS Stream on VirtualBox step by step.

The focus now shifts to CentOS Stream as the main CentOS distribution. In fact, at the end of 2021, curtains close on CentOS 8 which is a rebuild of RHEL 8, to pave the way for CentOS Stream which will serve the upstream branch of RHEL. In short, there won’t be CentOS 9 based on RHEL 9 or any other CentOS point release going forward.

Download CentOS Steam:

1. Go to website https://www.centos.org/download/ and click on x86_64.

2. Then, click on mirror link.

3. Then, click on CentOS-Stream-8-x86_64-20201210-dvd1.iso file to start download.

Wait until download is completed.

Install CentOS Steam on VirtualBox:

Once download is completed, then install CentOS Stream as described in below steps.

1. Open Oracle VM VirtualBox Manager.

2. Then, select New from Machine Menu as shown below.

3. Provide the name, Machine Folder path, Type, Version as Red hat 64 bit, RAM size and select Hard disk type as shown and click Create.

4. Then, provide the File Location and Files Size(Hard disk size of CentOS Stream). Default size is 8GB, change it to at least 50GB.

5. Then, Click on Create.

6. Right Click Virtual Machine from left menu and select Settings as show below.

7. Then, go to storage, empty then select Choose a disk file as shown below.

8. Then, select downloaded iso file: CentOS-Stream-8-x86_64-20201210-dvd1.iso and click on okay.

9. Now click on start button.

10. If you receive below message then select ISO and click start.

11. Then select CentOS Stream 8 and press Enter.

12. Then select the language and click on Continue.

13. Select the Installation Destionation, Software selection, set root password.

14. Wait until installation completes and following window appears.

15. Dont click on Reboot System. Right Click on Virtual Machine as shown below, select settings–>Storage–>Select ISO file –> select remove Disk from virtual drive.

16. Now click on Reboot System.
