In this article, we are going to see how to install Kali Linux on VirtualBox.
Kali Linux is an open-source, Debian-based Linux distribution geared towards various information security tasks, such as Penetration Testing, Security Research, Computer Forensics and Reverse Engineering.
In this article, we are going to perform following actions:
1. Download latest Kali Linux
2. Install Kali Linux on VirtualBox
3. Connect to Kali Linux
Download Kali Linux
1. Go to theKali Linux Official website
2. We have two types of downloads. One Bare Metal and other Virtual Machines. Click on Bare Metal.
3. Then click on 64-bit and click on download button on Installer as highlighted below.
4. Wait until download completes.

Install Kali Linux on VirtualBox
1. Open VirtualBox.
2. Click on New(Ctrl+N) or Machine–>New
3. Provide name for virtual machine, Machine Folder path, Type is Linux, and Version is Debian 64 bit and click on next.
Kali Linux is Debian type distro.
4. Provide memory size.
5. Select Create a Virtual hard disk now
6. Select Hard disk file type and click on next.
7. Select storage type(dynamically or fixed).
8. Provide the File location and size and click on create.
Until now we have created a virtual machine. But, we have not added(mounted) downloaded ISO file.
9. Select virtual machine name from left menu and click on settings then storage. Then Controller IDE and click on choose a disk file.
or click on optical drive.
10. Select the downloaded ISO file and click on ok.
11. Click on start button.
12. Use the up and download arrows from keyboard and select installation type and click on next. I am going with Graphical Install.
13. Select language and click on continue.
14. Select location and click on continue.
15. Select keyboard type and click on continue.
16. provide the name for Kali Linux host.
17. If we want to add this host to existing domain, then provide the domain name. Otherwise keep it as blank and click on continue.
18. We have to create a user at the time of installation. Provide Full name, Username and password for new user.
19. Select the clock(time zone) and click on continue.
20. Select the partition disks type and click on continue.
21. Select finish partitioning and write changes to disk.
22. Select yes and click on continue.
23. Select the software and click on continue.
24. Select the default manager to configure gdm3.
25. Select Yes to install GRUB boot loader.
26. Provide the device for GRUB boot loader and click on continue.
27. Installation is complete. Click on continue, it reboots the Kali Linux host.
Connect to Kali Linux on VirtualBox
1. Once Kali Linux is rebooted following screen will appear with username created at the time of installation. Then, click on it and provide the password.
2. Open terminal and run the command more /etc/os-release to check the Kali Linux version.
